Thursday September 30th, 2010 00:06 Melbourne is the New L.A

Where: Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne @ Day

Fotos y Texto por Francis Hadid

@Frambiee

I arrived in Melbourne 5 months ago, on the final days of the Australian autumn: the city is gallant and beautiful, and the geographical position doesn’t bother me: I‘ve always been a snob person. Since I arrived here I’ve been always looking for numberless ways to describe the city. It wasn’t until the first day of spring came on, when I received celestial help (Not from God, but from a friend) who literally enlightened me: Melbourne is the new L.A.

Why?

Cinema Picture Perfect: The city has a chameleonic capacity to duplicate on his streets more than 40 different cities around the world. This feature put a “must” on his shoulders when a director and his crew have to find the perfect location to do their film.

Melbourne @ Night

Music: Melbourne is a vivid wet dream for megalomaniacs, there are more of 30 concerts per week and national bands are really good: My personal favs are: Clousure in Moscow, Dead Letter Circus y Birds of Tokyo. Parkway Drive, Psycroptic y Against, this last one for the most extreme hardcore/rock fans.

Fashion @ Melbourne

Fashion and trends: “Is the place to be” to find vintage shops & thrift stores. Although if you suffer of obsessive compulsive disorder like me, and you would never use something well…used, there are plenty of boutiques with virgin clothes. My favorites: Sportsgirl, General Pants and Dangerfield.

Donas Melbourne

Food is the new fashion: The CBD (the towncenter) is known for his exquisite Asian gastronomy, but they have also food to feed every mouth requirements, and healthy versions of all those dishes. Desserts are my passion and I feel more than satisfied with that issue on Melbourne.

Melbourne, Australia

Geo-location: It´s only a direct flight away from L.A., so it is perfectly placed for everyone who wants to meet the rest of the world, is here when we kick L.A.’s ass. This weekend destinations could be: Fiji, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan and New Zealand.

Now, thinking straight and knowing I am one day ahead of you, Melbourne is NOT the new L.A., Melbourne is just…well, Melbourne.

Mark Hunter A.K.A. Thecobrasnake, the photographer of California’s night life, stopped making famous every myspace passé young girl, hungry of stardom, and opened his first store in the heart of Hollywood, simply called: The Cobra Shop

I remember being in one of his parties. He took me a lot of pictures that night and when I told her I was from Venezuela he said: “Oh! Cool”. I drank a lot of vodka so I don’t remember anything else. The following days, those pictures were published on his blog. Many people wrote to me things like: “I saw you on thecobrasnake!”. And it was at the time when I suddenly understand: the work of Mark Hunter is known between the Internet people and hipsters from around the world who wants to be from any other part in the world, but theirs.

The Cobrasnake always sold stuff over the Internet and now he counts with a real store of vintage and unique pieces. Is a clear reference for every Californian hipster, plastic artists, Mormons, gypsies, trendy-and-no-so-trendy people, insiders and everyone who takes pictures, have a twitter and messy hair all the time.

You can buy XXL t-shirts, used sneakers for a hundred bucks, and nice-and-not-so-nice clothing. On the store you can also sit down and watch films (some of them in classic VHS) or you can be the geekiest in town and play some videogames. The store has multiple options, I can’t exclude the possibility to do a picnic inside it or maybe get married in front of the TV. Panels. You just have to take out your creativity and Mark Hunter gives you the place to ignite it.

Monday September 27th, 2010 23:46 The Smiles: Tropical Grunge

Who: The Smiles

The Smiles

By Lizandro Melean

@lizandro_melean

Beach Boys, Sublime, Longbeach Dub Allstars and in a more punkish route, Pennywise, Rancid y RX-Bandits, are the Cliff Notes of the California sound in my book.

The Smiles could easily fit in the latter category of essential bands when you´want to feel near Redondo Beach through a pair of headphones. That’s the reason why his first EP is simply called Hermosa, echoing the famous beach in southern California who has the same name. The EP is starting a musical wave they like to call: tropical grunge

The Smiles is pure rock n’ roll with geek undertones. Is music for that loser who is always looking for the prettiest girl around the beach, but she doesn’t take notice of him ‘cause she likes to be with the first Jersey-Shore-type-of-guy who cross her eyes. Is music to relax on the beach and to be with your girl also -i’ll do it with mine in a couple of weeks-. Is the kind of music that needs to kill everything that sucks on radio these days.

His first single “Cala Cola”, if God do exist should be the next Jingle on the new campaign of the famous cola the name of the song make allusion of, it sounds like the sweet and bastard song of an orgy between the members of Vampire Weekend, Frightened Rabbit and The Strokes.

If the Dictionaries could have the possibility to reproduce music for every word, then this song would need to be besides the word “sticky”. There’s music for everything here. For Sundays “Sun”. For love “I Could Love You More”. For pre-teens “Girl I Love”. The Smiles is music like it should be: without air of fabricated greatness, only a great desire to have fun and to keep fresh sounds like grunge and rock n’ roll with a mix of reggae here and there.

Here´s the infamous single: “Cala Cola”

If you don´t like it, shame on you.

Monday September 27th, 2010 23:05 Frapuccino Starbucks in Caracas, Venezuela

$: Bs.F 40

Frapuccino @ Rey David variedad

By Greta Álvarez

@grets

People from other countries outside Venezuela won´t understand why something so mainstream as Starbucks is on a coolhunting page.

The answer is simple: in Venezuela we don´t have a Starbucks coffee shop anywhere, despite the desires of snob people, lovers of The Devil Wears Prada and frenetic adolescents, fans of Gossip Girl, and any workaholic who would love to walk around Altamira (a centric and cosmopolitan district of Caracas) with his smartphone in one hand and a caramel frapuccino on the other.

For this kind of wildlife-city-fauna, and for the rest too, CHP has discover the point where you can find Starbucks on a bottle. It´s price is Bs.F. 40 (around 10 US dollars). You can forget for a while the price is four times bigger than a regular Coffee in Venezuela and feel like a new yorker while you drink it.

Frapuccino @ Rey David

Option B: If you don’t want/can’t spend a dime, you can always show your gastronomical talents and make a frapu-DIY: here´s the recipe:: Make a Starbucks

Monday September 27th, 2010 01:50 Pencil = Outsiders

What: The liquid pencil

Who: Sharpie

Why: “No breaking leads, no breaking your flow”

Sharpie: Liquid Pencil

By Lizandro Melean

@lizandro_melean

Sharpie have just invented the successor of graphite, a liquid who writes as a pencil and it can be erased just as easy. You will no longer have to recharge your pen to continue your test when you don’t have more than 20 minutes extra to finish it. You can also burn in the kitchen that old pencil sharpener y throw away all the little pieces of graphite you have scattered all over your bedroom’s drawers.

The neo-pencil is made with a rechargeable liquid, similar to the ink used in printers, and with it you can write in and erase off at your wish, but only ‘till the third day after you wrote your stuff. If you try to erase something 72 hours later you will realize your handwritten is now officially permanent; or at least that’s what many pages affirm when they talk about the pen, which is being underrated in many web pages.

Sharpie: Liquid Pencil

This feature had been denied by some friendly users, who loves the freggin pen. They say they always can erase his spelling mistakes weeks after being committed, pointing out this little artifact as the next big thing of office spaces. If you want something really permanent, then stick to the old fashion Sharpie marker. If, on the other hand, you can’t stand to be an outsider, take out five bucks of your wallet, make yourself a favor and buy the damn thing.
